Introduction

Socialization is one of the bigger fears parents have when it comes to homeschooling. But fear not! There are so many ways to ease these worries, most of which are made possible because of homeschooling. Other than volunteering and clubs, another crucial way that your child can learn about socialization is through SEL.

Social and Emotional Learning, or SEL, is a crucial part of every child’s education – whether or not they are being homeschooled. As our global world continues to expand, it has become imperative that education be reimagined to prepare our children for this continued growth. UNESCO believes that education should be able to discuss conflicts like prejudice and discrimination to work towards a society of respect and peace.

While SEL is continuously being integrated into curriculums, it cannot fully flourish or be effective without the family’s support. It is normal to be skeptical of SEL if you don’t have a full grasp of it, but SEL may align perfectly with your hopes and dreams for your children. This blog is here to give you a better grasp of what SEL is and why it is so important for your child and society.

5 Core Competencies

Every child deserves to have the language and tools to understand their emotions and the emotions of others. SEL enhances your child’s cognitive, social/relational, and emotional skills in learning. It assists in the development of your child, increasing their well-being, which may lead to further academic success. The self-awareness and value for diversity that SEL can teach your child will prove useful to them all the way into adulthood.

SEL is valuable to students of all ages. It helps them navigate their emotions and build positive relationships with others. It also assists in goal setting and proactively striving towards accomplishing their goals.

SEL has 5 core competencies that they focus on developing in every child. These competencies are based on the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) research-based framework.

1. Self-Awareness
  • Students will learn to recognize their own emotions, what causes them, and the impact they have on their thoughts and actions. Self-awareness can also help them recognize their strengths and weaknesses. This awareness can give them confidence in their strengths and reassurance to work on/around their weaknesses.
2. Self-Management
  • More than just recognizing their emotions, SEL can also assist your child in handling their thoughts and emotions. Self-management teaches them about the importance of goal setting and finding manageable ways to achieve their goals. It can help them manage their impulses and increase their perseverance
3. Social Awareness
  • Social Awareness deals with deepening their sense of empathy, helping students understand what others may be going through. This also allows them to recognize their own support systems that they can turn to
4. Relationship Skills
  • This competency teaches students how to build and maintain healthy relationships with the people around them. It teaches them how to communicate and collaborate. Conflict resolution is also an important part of this competency.
5. Responsible Decision Making
  • Students learn how to carefully weigh the consequences of their decisions.

10 Benefits of SEL

SEL has both short and long-term benefits for children. Again, it is an important aspect of education whether or not you are homeschooling your child. Success is easier to attain when you can self-manage. Personal and social decisions become easier when you can empathize with others and evaluate the impact of your decisions comprehensively. We’ve enumerated 10 benefits that SEL has, but there are definitely still more out there. The timelessness of these benefits makes them priceless!

1. Own Their Actions
  • Becoming more self-aware helps children take ownership of their actions. They are able to gain confidence in their skills and take charge of their lives. This can lead to a more positive/kinder view of themselves, confidence, and stronger persistence. Getting to know themselves better also helps them recognize a stronger sense of belonging and their place in the world.
2. Develop Empathy
  • Being able to understand what people are going through and where they come from can lead to patience and compassion. Developing empathy can also assist them in nurturing relationships and interacting with a diverse social network. Empathy can improve their sense of collaboration, communication, and conflict-resolution.
3. Proactive Mindset
  • SEL teaches students to identify goals for themselves and create actionable steps to achieve these things. Not only will your child learn to want more for themselves, but they will learn how to attain it as well.
4. Community Participation as a Socially Aware Citizen
  • As your child becomes more aware of their place in the world and the power that their actions have, they may expand their consciousness outside themselves. Their empathy and compassion may move them towards action to build an inclusive, collaborative, and peaceful society.
5. Academic Achievement
  • Studies have shown that students with better mental health, who feel safe and understood in their education, are more likely to achieve academic success.
6. Resilience
  • Self-management will teach your child about the value of perseverance in the face of hardship and the reward of delayed gratification.
7. Lower Chances of Bad Mental Health
8. Navigate Cultural Differences
  • As globalization continues to spread into our daily lives, it is essential that your child learns how to navigate these changes. SEL can help them make the most of their interactions with diverse people with colorful cultures and beliefs. While your child may learn from the diversity around them, it can strengthen their own identity and embrace their uniqueness as well.
9. Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills
  • Conflict-resolution skills can be applied to both personal and social issues. Critical thinking and responsible decision making may assist your child’s ability to solve problems calmly and efficiently.
10. Avoid Peer Pressure
  • Strengthening their responsible decision making may help you rest assured that your child makes good choices no matter what situation they are in. Students of SEL have been known to have reduced conduct problems and avoid harmful risk-taking behavior.

How to Integrate SEL While Homeschooling

There are many resources that you can tap to weave SEL into your child’s homeschool curriculum. Many books and literature are available on and offline. There are also online platforms with games and exercises that facilitate interactive SEL lessons for students of all ages. Extracurricular activities are also a great avenue for your child to have hands-on experience learning about and implementing their knowledge on SEL.

  • make SEL personal and relatable to your child; give them opportunities relating to their interests to practice what they’ve learned to reinforce the core competencies in different situations
  • explore SEL centered activities:
    • journaling – a great way for your child to practice self-awareness and self-management; writing down their thoughts might help them better express themselves and see the connection between their emotions and the things happening around them
    • role play, interviews – help your child gain a deeper understanding of someone else’s perspective
    • goal setting – help them identify a goal for themselves, create a plan of action and measure their progress to give them a sense of achievement for every step of the way even before they reach their desired goal; you can also encourage them to have a goal buddy to help them both stay accountable
  • provide a safe space for your child to voice out their concerns and ask questions, being an active listener can help your child feel safe and encourage them to open up
